A personal journey
turned
into a
travel magazine.

What began with my own journey through Sri Lanka grew into an independent travel magazine designed to help others discover the island through practical guides, carefully researched destinations, travel tips and stories inspired by its culture and nature.

Built from the ground up, the project brings together web design, content creation, SEO and newsletter marketing to create a growing resource for curious travellers.

Project description

My Sri Lanka Magazine began with a personal journey and a desire to help others discover Sri Lanka beyond the usual tourist highlights.

Built from the ground up, the magazine launched with 73 pages of carefully structured content, including destination guides, practical travel advice, cultural stories and recommendations designed to help travellers explore the island with confidence.

The project goes beyond web design. It brings together content strategy, editorial design, SEO and newsletter integration to create a growing travel resource and build a meaningful connection between me as the author and the people who read my work.

The magazine continues to evolve with new content, ideas and opportunities to engage with its readers. What started as a personal passion has become an independent digital publication that I continue to develop, one story at a time.

Introduction

I spent months preparing for my journey to Sri Lanka, researching, planning and carefully organizing every detail. I thought I knew what to expect, but Sri Lanka had its own plans for me.

The unexpected moments, unplanned adventures and meaningful encounters became the most memorable parts of my journey. They inspired me to create My Sri Lanka Magazine, a place where I could share not only practical travel advice, but also the experiences, discoveries and stories that make this island so special.

What began as a personal adventure grew into a project I continue to nurture, with the hope of inspiring others to discover Sri Lanka in their own way.

Exploring

The research explored how travel magazines and blogs organize large amounts of content, inspire readers and keep them exploring. The findings shaped a clear editorial structure, an immersive visual style and easier ways to discover destinations.

Challenge

Turning a personal travel experience into a valuable digital publication required more than an attractive website. The challenge was to build a structured, engaging and useful resource that reflects the richness of the island and the personal perspective behind the magazine. The project required me to:

  • turn travel research into useful editorial content,
  • structure 73 pages of guides, tips and stories,
  • create an identity inspired by Sri Lanka’s culture,
  • make a growing library easy to navigate,
  • build a foundation for organic search growth,
  • connect with readers beyond the website.

The goal was to bring content, design and functionality together in one cohesive digital experience.

Solution

I built My Sri Lanka Magazine from the ground up, combining editorial design, content strategy, SEO and practical functionality to create an independent travel publication that can keep growing. The solution included:

  • immersive photography and a warm colour palette,
  • 73 pages structured for intuitive browsing,
  • a consistent layout and content hierarchy,
  • SEO foundations, including metadata, canonical URLs and an XML sitemap,
  • a free travel guide and an integrated newsletter,
  • a scalable structure ready for new destinations.

The result is more than a travel website: an independent publication combining personal storytelling, practical information and a community of curious travellers.

Every path leads
to a story

The magazine offers three ways into its content. Readers can explore by place, through seven regions, by interest, through nine travel themes, or start with practical travel tips. Every path leads to the stories, and every story offers a way to stay connected, through the free travel guide or the newsletter.

Final interface

The final design brings the magazine’s identity to life through warm sunset tones, elegant serif headlines, handwritten accents and immersive photography. Every page balances inspiration with practical information, so readers can dream about Sri Lanka and plan their journey in the same place.
